Air Max 1: real vs fake
Tinker Hatfield’s Air Max 1 (1987) was the first sneaker with a visible Air unit, inspired by the Centre Pompidou. Retro releases are heavily counterfeited, and fakes are most often exposed by the Air window proportions, the mudguard fit and the quality of the suede and mesh.
What to check on the Air Max 1
Model-specific zones — on top of the brand-level signs.
Air window proportions
The AM1 window is smaller than on later Air Max models and stretched along the heel. On the original the clarity is even and the midsole cutout is neat, with no ragged edge. An oversized or sunken window signals a wrong mold.
Mudguard shape
The protective panel around the toe follows the last and sits flat on an authentic pair. On fakes the mudguard ripples, the stitching puckers the material, and the panel height differs between shoes.
Suede and mesh quality
On retro releases the suede is dense with a short, even nap, and the mesh is springy with a uniform weave. Thin, balding suede and soft, loose mesh are typical of replicas.
Swoosh reaching the heel
The Swoosh tail on the AM1 extends almost to the heel panel. Check the angle, the sharp tip and identical tail placement on both shoes.
Waffle outsole
The waffle-pattern outsole is molded crisply on the original, with squares of equal depth. Smeared waffle corners and uneven depth are a marker of cheap molding.

FAQ
How does the AM1 Air window differ from the AM90 window when authenticating?
The AM1 window is noticeably smaller and has no massive colored TPU frame like the AM90. If a pair sold as an Air Max 1 shows a large window with a wide plastic frame, you are looking at either a different model or a fake.
The midsole on my retro pair is slightly yellowed — is it fake?
Midsole yellowing over time is natural for authentic pairs, especially ones older than a couple of years. What matters more is crisp molding, a clean Air window cutout and suede quality — age does not change those signals.
